Abstract Detail

Name School Title of presentation
Lucile Guillaud MIT A regional earthquake risk assessment methodology for trains

Divider!

A regional earthquake risk assessment methodology for trains is presented. The regional approach takes a system view of earthquake-induced damages, in particularly derailments, and allows one to measure consequences at a regional rather than local scale. A challenge in developping a regional earthquake risk approach is how to deal with spatial variability. Spatial variation in ground motion may cause some portions of a line to be damaged while other are not and some trains to derail while others do not. This paper presents a general computational structure and the main issues related with a risk evaluation accounting for spatial variability of ground motion.
