Abstract Detail

|
Work zones present challenges to drivers that are different than
normal driving conditions. However many drivers do not alter
their speed selection entering a work zone for one of many
reasons. This creates a hazardous situation that has caused
many injuries and deaths both in the Commonwealth and across
the county. Law enforcement personnel have troubles enforcing
speed laws effectively in work zones because of the limited
space to issue a ticket within a work zone. Automated speed
enforcement provides a constant law enforcement presence in
places where there are increased hazards because of work zone
activities. However, automated speed enforcement is resisted
by many Americans fearing invasion of privacy. This
controversial technology has many benefits and challenges
associated with its implementation. This presentation will
weigh the pros and cons of this technology.
