The Sumner Express currently operates along the Sumner Avenue corridor in Springfield, MA, making limited stops and using 3M Opticom signal pre-emption equipment installed in the buses and signals. This paper outlines the problems currently experienced by transit, vehicles and riders along this route and offers solutions to improve the existing service without negatively impacting other vehicles. By implementing additional ITS strategies, building off existing ITS and recommendations for low cost infrastructure improvements, delay can be greatly decreased for both transit and vehicles not only along this corridor but throughout the entire transit system.
