Abstract Detail

|
Lane departure crashes account for a high percentage of incapacitating injury and fatal crashes in Massachusetts. These types of crashes have been identified as a major problem at the national level as well; they are a component of the AASHTO Strategic Highway Safety Plan and US DOT efforts to reduce the rate of fatalities in the US to 1.0 per hundred million vehicle miles traveled. This presentation includes the findings of a lane departure crash data analysis that considered lane departure crashes in Massachusetts examining collision characteristics (object collided with, crash severity), location characteristics (RPA and crash location), roadway characteristics (jurisdiction, functional classification, alignment, lighting, and road surface), and behavioral characteristics (alcohol and speed). In addition, the results of analysis of linked crash-hospital data are included to provide information on charges and injuries associated with lane departure crashes.
