Elsa Chan UMass Amherst Attention Maintenance of Newly Licensed and Experienced Drivers: An Evaluation on Drivers’ Performance with In-Vehicle Distractions

Divider!

Driving experience is one of the most important factors in the differences in the number of crashes between newly licensed drivers and experienced drivers. As driving experience increase, vehicle handling skills becomes automated, and therefore will be likely to have a higher performance in carrying out primary task (driving) and secondary tasks. (cell phone, GPS, etc.) Newly licensed drivers have the highest rates of fatalities and injuries per mile driven than any other age groups, with the increase use of cell phones and other in-vehicle distractions, the number of crashes increases significantly for newly licensed drivers. Newly licensed drivers (16-24) have the highest rates of cell phone use of any other age category, with less driving experience than experienced drivers, newly licensed drivers are less likely to detect harmful events than experienced drivers. This research proposes the background information and methodology for evaluating and comparing the driving performance and eye fixation of newly licensed and experienced drivers related to in-vehicle distractions. The driving simulator and eye tracker at the University of Massachusetts will be used to conduct the experimental part of this research.
