The development of geographic information systems (GIS) tools and databases has created the opportunity for transit service planning at a the level of the land use parcel. In cities with the requisite database, the modeling of multi-unit residential parcels can be extended to the household level. GIS modeling at the parcel level should vastly improve our ability to analyze the impacts of proposed transit service changes, and improve our ability to map transit demand. Using parcel level GIS and on and off counts we are able to merge two sets of data that were not traditionally combined in transit demand modeling. Case studies of two routes in two municipalities in the Northeast will be presented.
