MIT-Portugal Program: Collaboration in Education and Research
|

Since 2006, MIT has been engaged in a multi-year educational and research collaboration with the Portuguese Ministry of Science,
Technology, and Higher Education. This presentation will summarize the accomplishments and plans for the transportation systems focus
area of the MIT-Portugal Program
First, on the educational side, MIT faculty, students, and staff have supported the development of innovative transportation curriculum
in Portugal. For example, in the fall of 2007, Portugal accepted its first class of students for the Complex Transportation Infrastructure
Systems Master’s degree program, co-taught by faculty from three Portuguese universities and MIT. The main features of this program are
its international outlook, its link to industry, and its focus on the three core domains of management and financing, engineering, and
policy and regulation. In addition, last October, the three Portuguese universities unveiled a collaborative transportation doctoral
program.
Second, on the research side, faculty and students from the three Portuguese universities and MIT have undertaken collaborative research
in three areas: airports, high speed rail, and intelligent transportation systems. There is also cross-cutting research on the relationship
between transportation systems, land use, urban revitalization, and regional planning.
