A backup crash is considered to have occurred when a driver traveling in reverse collides with a vehicle, person, or object.
Backup crashes are a serious traffic safety issue, with approximately 2,500 children under the age of 15 being involved in back-over
crashes each year. This research initiative focused on evaluating the potential safety benefits of a for-market in-vehicle parking assist
system on the backup crash phenomena. The system consists of a rear mounted camera which displays an image on the instrument panel when
the vehicle is in reverse and an ultra sonic sensor system mounted on the front and rear bumper which triggers audible warnings when an
object is near the vehicle. The system was field-tested with 36 experimental subjects and 10 control subjects on an experimental course,
which required drivers to simulate parking related and backing maneuvers at two separate driving sessions. At different intervals drivers
were exposed to simulated backup crash scenarios. The results of the experiment provide insight regarding impacts of the existing system
as well as how a system may be enhanced to help prevent backup crashes.
