Performance Analysis and Design of Roundabout Slip Lane
|

The Slip lane is a right lane provided adjacent to the modern roundabout circular lanes that allows heavy right-turning movements to
bypass the roundabout. Slip lane at roundabout increases flow of the right-turn traffic, reduces delay, and reduces conflict points
within the roundabout.
Slip lane warrants or guidelines are not clearly established in the Roundabout Informational Guide by FHWA. FHWA introduced only two
options for designing Slip lanes, using Slip lanes as acceleration lanes and using Slip lanes with a yield line, as a traffic control
device, to the roundabout exit leg.
Therefore, the goal of this research is to gain better understanding about roundabout Slip lanes and their behaviors to assess their
performance and design parameters and to determine when they are necessary and feasible.
This research will provide a guide, to be called the Slip lane of Roundabout Guide, would assist in producing an optimum Slip lane(s)
design configurations. This will conclude the research hypothesis that roundabout with a Slip lane may improve the safety of those
circular intersections by identifying and optimizing any geometric features variations that can help to reduce potential conflict
occurrence and severity and increase safety benefits.
