Highlights of the importance of research in the areas of vehicle positioning technologies
|

|
Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) applications have a great potential for making improvements in safety and mobility, the successful
implementation of a VII system requires a great breadth of research and the involvement of a great number of stakeholders. This paper
presents a comprehensive examination of stakeholder viewpoints regarding the VII initiative, as well as a synthesis of the research and
related activities being conducted. The paper highlights the importance of research in the areas of vehicle positioning technologies and
human factors research, as these could prove to be the limiting factors of the effectiveness of VII applications. Additionally the
report emphasizes the importance of developing testbeds in parallel with simulation studies, as testbed data can be used to validate
simulation models, while simulation studies could be used to enhance the future design of the VII infrastructure used in testbed studies. Furthermore, if action is not taken to address the significant institutional issues in the areas of privacy and liability, the implementation of VII technologies could be greatly impeded. To address this issue, central leadership will be required, and a plan of action for resolving the concerns of various stakeholders will need to be established. To ensure the eventual success of VII implementations, additional legislation may also be required, this legislation should focus on providing operational funding and mitigating the impacts of liability on VII implementations.
