Comparison and Evaluation of Quick Zone and QUEWZ simulation software
|

|
Analysis of Work zones on freeways and arterial streets is critical to predict the traffic delay and queue length. Moreover, the results
obtained from these analyses are key inputs in making the critical decision of work zone time period. Several computer software programs
are available that are capable of performing work zone analysis. However, software’s such as Quick Zone, QUEWZ, and CA4PRS claim to make
accurate estimates of queue length and user costs. However, each of these programs has their strengths and weakness. Their performance
in terms of reproducing observed field conditions depend upon the traffic data in hand and how well the models are calibrated. The main
objective of this paper is to compare and evaluate Quick Zone and QUEWZ simulation software’s, the ability to accurately reflect real-time
observed field conditions in I-95 Greenfield, MA, I-91 Windsor, CT and I-95 Bangor, ME. The observed Queue lengths were from Quick zone
and QUEWZ are very close to the field observations. In general, when compared with field observations, in most cases Quick zone results
are closer to reality than those obtained using QUEWZ. The advantages and disadvantages of using the traffic simulation software’s in
producing the real world data and the feasibility to use the software are discussed below.
