A discrete/continuous approach for modeling car ownership and use in London
|

|
Traditional models have predicted the levels of car use based on car ownership estimates, which, in turn, are a function of population
growth. Such an approach no longer yields accurate estimates, especially in cities with high densities and public transport mode shares.
This paper presents a discrete/continuous approach for modeling car ownership and use in London. The intuition behind this approach lies
in the fact that car ownership and use are joint decisions that are influenced by both fixed and variable costs. The model we develop
includes socioeconomic, land use, and public transport accessibility variables. We find that income and household structure play a
significant role in both car ownership and use decisions. Land use variables have a significant effect on car ownership as well as on
car use for households that own one car. Finally, public transport accessibility also has a significant effect on both car ownership
and use.
