Methods of Quantitative and Qualitative Reviews of Crash Data
|

|
A core element within the science of traffic safety is access to accurate and timely crash data.
The focus of this research effort is an evaluation of the very methods which are typically employed to assess the quality of
various data sources throughout the country. This research integrates three different research projects currently underway within
the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, each of which focus on crash data issues. Each of the encompassed projects utilizes a different
method in an effort to both identify the problems with crash data and to stipulate possible solutions for improving the quality of
this data. More specifically, the methods used in these three projects include direct surveys, coordinated focus groups, and data audits.
The research focus incorporated both quantitative and qualitative reviews of these methods, resulting in an assessment of the
application of each in addressing different research hypotheses. The culmination of this research is intended to have a duel effect,
in that specifies characteristics that can be achieved using each evaluation method as well as an understanding of how these methods
can be used in a timely and cost effective manner.
