Optimized Storage of NGSIM Trajectory Data
|

|
The Next Generation Simulation (NGSIM) program provides detailed vehicle trajectory datasets. Establishing data formats is a major
task set forth by the directors of NGSIM. Currently, one file representing 15 minutes worth of vehicle trajectory data contains over
1.2 million lines and requires 175 megabytes of storage. This data is cumbersome to access, due to it being stored in a single text file,
and contains redundant information. To address this issue, an application was developed to extract the important data and insert it
into a separate database. The database allows for easy and efficient access to the trajectory data, regardless of computer speed, OS,
or other limitations. The data is well organized and takes up 55% less storage space. A powerful web application was also developed
which allows the user to query and display information very fast and easily. The storage application, database structure, and web
application is extendable, and a new standardized data format is proposed.
